Located in one of the most gorgeous regions in Costa Rica, Gandoca is a wildlife refuge on the Caribbean, just a few miles from the Panama border. Its habitat is classified as being humid tropical rainforest, which is one of the reasons why the area is home to some of the most beautifully endangered flora and fauna. As if this wasn’t enough, Gandoca is close enough to Limon, which means you can enjoy the rawness of the wildlife and still be close to nice hotels, bars and restaurants.
The refuge is located about 70 kilometers from Limon. Although it is accessible by car, we do recommend you take a strong 4×4 vehicle, as the ride includes many dirt roads. The best way to get here is to first drive up to Limon, and then take the route towards Gandoca Manzanillo.
Punta Uva, Punta Mona, Home Creek and Manzanillo are all beaches that make up this amazing refuge. It is said that Gandoca is home to some of the striking white sand beaches in the whole Caribbean! Which means, if you do decide to visit Gandoca, you will be chilling in one of the most unique beaches you will ever set foot on! Also, you may choose to go on one of the multiple hikes which lead to side trails along the coast where you will find tiny coves you can explore.

The Gandoca wildlife refuge has so much beauty for you to enjoy! Its flora and fauna is simply breathtaking! If you are lucky, you may see anything from toucans and tapirs, to crocodiles, sea turtles and even dolphins! Maritime animals are also spectacular in the area which makes it an amazing spot for scuba diving or snorkeling!
After a day of much adventure time, you definitely need some rest and a good meal. Limon offers lots of small restaurants with great fresh menus, uniquely comfortable hotels and great bars for you to unwind.
Visiting Gandoca Manzanillo is best during the rainy season in Costa Rica, as it turns out that weather in the Caribbean works back ways (its sunnier during the rainy season). Your best bet: Visiting during the month of March through April and from September to October.
