The quiet village of Malpais is the perfect spot for locals or visitors to escape the stress of the big city and simply chill. Characterized for being one of the more relaxing beaches in the country, Malpais has everything you need for the most re-vitalizing holiday!

Although Malpais is only a small village, many people refer to the entire beach area as Malpais. So usually when locals talk about Malpais having some of the most gorgeous naturals surroundings and surfing spots; they also include beaches such as Santa Teresa and Playa Carmen.

A surfer’s paradise: that’s how Malpais is described! Providing consistent waves and swells all year round, these beaches are perfect for every type of surfer out there. The volcanic formations along the shore create the most amazing scenery for both beach lovers as well as surfers.

In recent years there has been a lot of development in the area, however Malpais has been one of the very few villages that has retained its laid-back, small town atmosphere.
So you may imagine the peacefulness and serenity you can get from taking your holidays at this beautiful destination!

With only a few hotels and shops, Malpais is most know for its crystalline oceans, white sandy beaches and large patches of unspoiled nature. The beach itself alternates between long stretches of sand and large patches of rock.

Besides surfing, Malpais is also known for having great day and night activities. Whether you are travelling with friends or family, there are always great things to do such as sport fishing, snorkeling, kite surfing, diving, biking, hiking, atv rides, canopy or even horseback riding at sunset on the beach!

Getting to Malpais might take you some time but it is so worth it! You will need to drive for about 6-7 hours from San Jose and also catch a Ferry at Puntarenas. Driving conditions are usually nice, however if you are planning on exploring the area a 4×4 vehicle is recommended.
