In Places to Visit

Costa Rica is known for its crystal clean oceans, refreshing rivers and intensely beautiful waterfalls. But not many know the country is also home to some of the coolest lakes you will ever get to see! Surrounded by so much nature and wildlife you will think its something out of a movie!
Want to check them out? Well then you should start off by visiting the Hule Lake!

Known in Spanish as ‘La Laguna de Hule’, this gorgeous lake is part of the “Bosque Alegre” National Wildlife Refuge (which translates to happy forest). So you can only imagine its beauty! Hule Lake is located on your way to the Poas Volcano, about 60 kilometers from San Jose. The ride is a bit long and bumpy but it is so worth it!

The area is home to three different lakes or lagoons which are separated by volcanic mountain. This makes the area abundant in unique flora and fauna, which is one of the main reasons why the lakes are so special. The biggest lake is the Hule which has a surface of about 40 hectares and is approximately 75 meters deep. There are other two lakes named Congo and Bosque Alegre which are smaller in size but equal in beauty.

The Hule Lake is the perfect place for a nice picnic, so make sure you take everything you need for your Sunday lunch. Hydration is very necessary as there are no restaurants near the actual lake.

Once you actually get to the lake, you will understand simply how uniquely stunning it is! Given that the Hule Lake is within a National Wildlife Refuge, you will get to experience some of the most naturally intense trips of your life – guaranteed! Some of the usual wildlife you will get to see in the area are birds, armadillos, wild ducks, congos and white-faced monkeys.
You are welcome to take any sort of flotation device to the lake (as long as you don’t damage or contaminate), such as a kayak or a small boat. There is also an amazing lookout balcony which is just stunning during sunrises and sunsets!

Don’t miss to visit one of Costa Rica’s unknown wonders! Take a nice day trip to the Hule Lake!
