In Places to Visit

Few have heard of it and extremely few have visited it. Located about 20 kilometers offshore from the amazing Osa Peninsula is the gorgeous Caño Island (also known as Isla del Caño). This awesome marine biological reserve covers around 300 hectares and is considered one of the most important archeological and geographical islands due to its history.

Being a small island, Caño Island can only be accessed by small boats. Driving conditions to near by beaches where you can rent a boat may vary depending on the season and time of year. We mostly recommend you take an SUV or 4×4 vehicle, as you may need to go through some dirt roads.

The island’s lushness both at land and at sea is breath taking. At land the island is completely covered with trees reaching more than 160 feet high. This beautiful place is also archeologically rich as it contains remains of an Indigenous tribe as well as perfectly spherical stones which are scattered all throughout the Island.

The real beauty of Caño Island however lies underwater. This is one of the most famous and sought-after scuba diving spots in the world as it has the largest concentration of coral building organisms in the Pacific Ocean – just imagine that! Diving in some of the bluest oceans and getting to swim right next to some of the most majestic sea creatures is most definitely a unique experience! You will get to see everything from schools of parrotfish, eels, lobsters and even manta rays, sea turtles and white-tipped reef sharks.

Given that Caño Island is a biological reserve, diving is very regulated. Even tourist activity is controlled as you may only visit the north face of the island. Either way, there are numerous activities you can do if you decide to spend a day at Caño Island. You may want to sit and enjoy a picnic by the sea, go swimming or scuba diving in the crystalline oceans, walk the hiking trails that go through the island or simply sitting on the warm sand and getting some tropical sun.

If you are a marine lover, or simply love to enjoy a nice sunny day at a beautiful beach – Caño Island is for you!
