In Places to Visit

Scuba diving in one of the ten best spots in the world: Coco’s Island!

One of Costa Rica’s most safeguarded treasures is found right in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, approximately 550 km from the Costa Rican coast. Coco’s Island (known in Spanish as “Isla del Coco”) has one of the most intense floras and fauna’s in the world! -And it has an area of barely 24 km2!

Its deep waters are full of incredible corals, caves and hundreds of marine species; which makes it the perfect place to visit for skilled scuba divers. Coco’s Island was not only chosen as one of the ten best scuba diving spots in the world, but it was also designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997.

It takes about 30 hours to reach the Island from the Costa Rican coast. But this is definitely a plus as the only humans you will find here are the park rangers, which guard the island.

It’s said by experienced scuba divers that the best time of the year to visit Coco’s Island is during the rainy season (even though it may not be the best time for anyone else tagging along the trip). The rainy season brings along cold currents, which fortunately also attracts the sharks swimming on the ocean’s depths.

Surrounding Coco’s Island you will find the bluest, clearest water where you will find volcanic tunnels, cave, rich coral reef’s and of course an hundreds of species of molluscs, crustaceans and fish (including large marine animals).  Sharks are the Island’s number one attraction for scuba divers. If you are lucky enough, once you go into the depths, you will be able to see everything from the Hammerhead shark and the Whitetip reef shark, to the breathtaking Whale shark. You may also get to see turtles, whales and dolphins.

The most well-known and famous diving spot in the Island is called the “Alcyone”. This amazing diving spot is located about 90 feet deep and is characterized by having the fiercest currents. Despite the intimidating currents and surroundings, scuba diving the “Alcyone” is worthwhile when you find yourself swimming with Whale sharks, giant Manta Rays and huge Octopuses – a diver’s dream!

Have a scuba diving permit? Feeling brave and in need to explore new exciting waters? Book a trip to the jaw-dropping Coco’s Island. We promise it will be an experience of a lifetime!
