If you’re planning to drive to far-off sights, then you’ll be better off when you rent a car in Costa Rica. It’s an excellent and fun way to get around the country and see the many wonderful places it offers. From the beach to the jungle, you’re sure to have a lot of fun.
However, make sure it’s going to be fun for your wallet too. Here are some mistakes you’ll want to avoid when you go for a rental car:
Not checking the rates
Don’t get taken in by low rates at a first glance. Plenty of great rates go back down to being ordinary when you add in a bevy of booking fees and taxes. So calculate the entire cost before you say yes to that offer.
Check the dates
If you’re flexible about the dates, try to book different combinations. Booking on a Thursday, Tuesday or weekends can net you big savings. Arrange your trip so you either rent it from the weekends onwards to Tuesday or get it on a Thursday to Sunday schedule instead. Your wallet will thank you either way.
Be wary of add-ons
A lot of companies might charge you ridiculously low rates. These offers tend to pile up a lot of add-ons. If you don’t want to find yourself buried under a ton of extra charges, just say no. If you can’t take the rates without those extras, then best to go elsewhere.
Live a little
If you want to experience a bit of luxury while on that vacation, who’s going to stop you? So take a chance and go for some of the high-end cars in the fleet. You can still take advantage of some special offers or weekend promos to make sure you slash some off of the original rental cost.
Rent longer
Weekly rates are cheaper. So if you’re staying for a while, why not rent a car in Costa Rica for the entire week or two? You could save up a lot while you go sight-seeing to every tourist destination on your list of must-see spots.
Ask for a grace period
Some companies do offer an hour or two of grace period for when you return the car. By asking, you avoid paying for a ton of charges if you happen to be a minute or thirty minutes late in taking it back.
