Although small in size compared to other National Parks in the country, it contains the same (or even more) diversity in both flora and fauna – so you can imagine what and intensely rich experience it must be to visit here!
Cahuita National Park is unique not only because of its richness, but also because it is located on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, so this means that the vegetation and overall conditions are very singular. This incredible National Park protects both the beaches and lowlands, which provide many different attractions to people who decide to visit.
The park was originally created as the Cahuita National Monument in 1970 but was later converted to a National Park. Ever since, both locals and tourists have been visiting this amazing park in order to check out the gorgeous coralline reefs, snorkel and enjoy the delicious taste of the Caribbean culture.
Probably the most popular attraction in Cahuita National Park, is anything and everything that has to do with the sea! It is best to visit Cahuita during the dry season (February through April), as the water tends to be clearer and cleaner. Whether its snorkeling or scuba diving, you will be amazed by the approximate 500 species of fish that live on the reef. You fill be able to see everything from sea urchins and blue parrot fish, to green turtles, manta rays and even 3 different species of sharks. During the 1991, an earthquake damaged a large portion of the coral reef as it exposed it to the sun and air.
Part of the park’s aquatic charm is the eighteenth century slave shipwreck that sits at the mouth of the Perezoso River. You are actually able to snorkel near it and appreciate all of the marine life that has grown on it.
Beautiful hiking trails are also available at the Cahuita National Park. The most popular one is the trail that goes from Kelly Creek to the Puerto Vargas station. If you walk quietly through the trail you may bump into frogs, iguanas, possums and even sloths and monkeys.
Cahuita National Park is extremely close to town, so hotels and restaurants are very close. Roads are also quite developed so you will be able to take anything from a Compact to a 4×4 vehicle. After being named one of Costa Rica’s wonders, we’re sure you wouldn’t want to miss going here! Where you’ll find many sedans or SUV vehicles for this adventure.
