El Silencio Volcano Hike

This is for all of you nature-freaks, hiking fanatics and adrenaline junkies.

There is no better way to get some great exercise, get your blood pumping and lungs working that to take a good hike up a mountain. Whether you make a day trip out of it or the entire weekend, finding new and exciting trails is always great fun!

A great option for hiking is located in the Arenal Volcano National Park and it is known as “El Silencio” (a.k.a The silence) Volcano Hike. El Silencio is a series of hiking trails that wind through the National Park which is located about 3-4 hours from San Jose (with little traffic). Roads are pretty decent getting to the area, however 4×4’s are recommended especially during the rainy season.

The property is a vast 225 hectare reserve of primary rainforest full of some of the most beautiful flora and fauna.

El Silencio Volcano Hike has a total length of 14 kilometers which divide themselves into 4 different trails: La Araña, Los Sainos, Tabacón and Manantial. Al the trails have different lengths and difficulty levels so you may pick and choose the once you would rather hike.

One of the area’s highlights is the lookout that has some of the most amazing views of the volcano and its hillsides.

El Silencio Volcano Hike is extremely close to the actual volcano. For this reason the area has been marked as a high-risk zone. However the actual volcano has not had an eruption since 1968 and has actually entered into a ‘resting phase’ since 2010.

Al four hiking trails give you some of the most spectacular views of the volcano, the rainforest and all of the amazing animals which live there.

If you are planning to visit such an amazing place, make sure you bring good comfortable hiking shoes, light clothing, water and lots of insect repellent. Also, cameras and binoculars are highly recommended in case you want to capture the area’s wilderness up close.
