Golfo Dulce Open water competition

Home to some of the most beautiful beaches, oceans and marine wildlife, Costa Rica is really a go-to spot for aquatic activities. Its jaw-dropping locations make it the perfect place to really enjoy yourself while doing what you love! So what better place to have an open water competition, than right here on our South Pacific beaches!

The famous Open Water Competition takes place in Golfo Dulce and offers various distances fit for every type of athlete. This year’s competition is just around the corner! Taking place from Friday September 2nd to Sunday September 4th, the Golfo Dulce Open waters competition offers three different distances: 1,5 km and 5 km, and a 14 km marathon swim. It is part of the 2015-2016 World Open Water Swimming Series.

Competitors will really have an extreme experience during this 3-day-race!

Friday starts off fairly calm as it is mostly about informational talks where you will review the race’s overall schedule and regulations.

On Saturday the real adventure begins! On this first competition day, the 14 km race takes place on Playa Nicuesa. This intense competition really tests the competitor’s stamina and determination and proves to be a challenge even to the most skilled athletes. The actual 14 km race begins at 6:30 a.m. and the award ceremony takes place on this same beach at 12:30 p.m.

On Sunday both the 1.5 km and 5 km competitions take place. The 5 km open water competition takes place in Playa Preciosa at 9:20 a.m. while the 1.5km race is on Playa Puntarenitas at 9:00 a.m. The award ceremony also takes place at 12:30 p.m. on Playa Puntarenitas.

Participants of every age are welcome to take part in the Golfo Dulce Open Water competition. The categories range from 14 (and less) to over 60 years of age.

Interested in participating? Its easy! Just head to the website and register in any of the three races (each race has a different registration fee). However, regardless of the competition you decide to take part in, the fee will always include accident insurance, participation medal, swimming cap, a t-shirt and a bag.
