If you are one of those intense wildlife lovers, then visiting Caño Negro is for you! Located near the border with Nicaragua, Caño Negro is possibly one of the most remote and difficult tourist places to reach in the country – Oh but it is so worth it!
Although most don’t know it, Caño Negro is actually a Wild Life Refuge and was named Wetland of International Importance in 1991. It is located in the northern part of Costa Rica near the border of the Alajuela province and Nicaragua. This remote area is submerged in water for half of the year caused by the rainy season and flooded rivers.
Caño Negro is home to numerous species, many of them which migrate during part of the year for the rainy or dry seasons.
Being a remote area, the refuge can only be explored by boat. So most (if not all tours) can only actually bring you near the refuge – and not actually within it. As you can imagine, there are no public facilities in the area, so it is extremely important you prepare well for the tour.
Although you are only able to circle around the Caño Negro refuge by boat, it is most than enough to be able to see all of its wildlife wonder! The delicate ecosystem of the wetlands creates the most wonderful habitat for many different plants and animal life, many of which are endangered or rare.
During the wet season (July to November), many species of birds migrate from the north of the continent over to Caño Negro. Bird watching is actually one of the area’s main attractions as it contains more than 200 species of birds. Some of the most common are ibis, roseate spoonbill, jabiru storks, egrets and cormorants.
Other interesting wildlife you may come across on the boat ride around Caño Negro are monkeys, tarpons, sloths, jaguars, tapirs, deer’s, turtles and even caiman. You may even get to see bull sharks as this area is the end of their annual trip up the Río Nicaragua due to change in season’s.
You may visit Caño Negro during any time of the year, as both season’s bring different attractions to the area. So whether you visit during the rainy or dry season, you will be amazed by the area’s uniqueness and wildlife!
